What is skin pH and what is its purpose?

_______________

For some, skin pH brings back memories of chemistry lessons; for the lucky few, its definition and usefulness are still fresh in their minds… for others, here's a reminder along with some skincare tips.

Getting to know your skin better

pH — potential of hydrogen — is the measure of the acidity of a solution or element. Calculated from 0 to 14, it is considered neutral pH when it is at 7. Below this, the pH is considered acidic; above, it is said to be alkaline or basic.

It turns out that our skin, composed of approximately 70% water, has a pH that must be respected. On average, our skin's pH is naturally between 4.7 and 5.5. This acidity allows us to protect ourselves from external aggressions such as extreme climatic conditions (hot and cold), pollution, or UV. This measurement varies according to the different areas of our body and face, as well as our age.

Beyond its chemical meaning, pH is simply the factor necessary for the skin to produce a homogeneous mixture of lipids and water. Because water and sebum only mix on the skin when its natural "slightly acidic" pH is respected.

It is this proper regulation of sebum and hydration of our skin that will nourish and preserve our hydrolipidic film, the most important layer of our epidermis.

Which products should you use to preserve your natural pH?

To respect the natural pH of our skin and its balance, it is therefore essential to select natural and organic cosmetic products whose pH is close to or equal to that of our skin.

This is first and foremost the case for our Phyt'acid cleanser from PHYTO 5's Swiss range, which deeply cleanses the skin while maintaining its natural pH and preserving the hydrolipidic film.

Then, opt for an emulsion composed of oil and water, brought to the same pH as the skin, with our Acid Cream from the same PHYTO 5 Swiss range. The presence of fat and water mixed in the form of a cream brought to a slightly acidic pH allows for the immediate restoration of the hydrolipidic film. The latter being itself composed of sebum (lipids) and water, the use of an acid cream will naturally support its restoration.

Daily life

Note, let's not forget to protect ourselves from UV and cold, which are common disruptions to the skin's natural pH. Also be careful of variations in the natural balance and solutions (skincare and/or makeup) that are too aggressive for the skin, as they are also responsible for cutaneous disturbances.
